The Top 3 Highest-Grossing Video Games Of All Time

By Francis Tunwase

You might be curious to know which video games made the most money for their developers. Most successful video games in history reflect the ever-expanding interest in gaming in general, and of how far technology has come in enabling some of the most memorable titles to be released. Here are the top three grossing titles across all gaming platforms, as determined by our research.

1. Pac-Man

No video game list would be complete without Pac-Man. Japanese designer Toru Iwatani based the character’s design on pizza. A pizza missing a slice provided Iwatani with the concept for the idea of an “animated pizza, racing around a maze and consuming things with its absent-slice mouth.” The avatar was designed to be appealing to ladies and younger players with a fun and vibrant look. Inflation-adjusted sales total more than $19 billion and $200 million, making it the highest-grossing video game of all time.

2. Space Invaders

One of the most important games ever made is Taito’s 1978 introduction of Space Invaders. With its simplistic graphics and action, it helped shape the video game industry. Although it’s the oldest game on this list, its enduring popularity makes it an obvious choice. Second only to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, it raked in more than $19 billion globally.

3. Dungeon Fighter Online

Third on the list of the highest-grossing video games is a beat ’em up developed by Neople and released in 2005. Dungeon Fighter Online has received little attention outside of China, where it is extremely popular and continues to set sales records to this day.
